Should glassware be banned at bars in Boston?
Last week, at the Landsdowne Pub in Boston, a 23-year-old man’s life was taken as a result of a fight that broke out where a glass was thrown and a shard of glass cut the man’s throat. As reported by Insurance Journal and The Boston Globe, the bar has decided to switch at least temporarily to plastic cups and nonglass bottles. As stated by Insurance Journal, “prosecutors say DiMaria was an innocent bystander to an argument between Hector Guardiola and another man at the bar. Guardiola has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter”.
According to Jack Nicas’ article in The Boston Globe, there are two licensing departments involved in this incident. “The head of the city’s Licensing Board said yesterday that the Landsdowne Street bar…will retain its liquor license and that the board will support the pub’s right to use glassware”. Patricia Malone, Boston’s director of consumer affairs and licensing who governs entertainment licenses, “asked the bar to switch to plastic cups and nonglass bottles until the hearing with her Sept. 15. In addition to Malone’s hearing, the bar will go before the Licensing Board for a violation hearing, which is standard after any serious incident”.
