Last week, there was a very interesting article from Insurance Journal regarding identity theft and a study of Travelers’ 2009 claims data. According to Travelers customers, “in some 76 percent of all cases of identity fraud, burglary, stolen wallets and stolen identifications top the list of the most common known causes”. In accordance with the comparison of 2008 data from Travelers, “ ‘the study suggests once again that more traditional means of identity fraud are prevalent today and continue to pose significant risks to consumers’, said Joe Reynolds, Identity Fraud Product Manager for Travelers”.
Travelers identified the following as the top known causes of identity fraud for its customers:- 76%: burglary and theft of wallet/purse/personal identification/computer
- 9%: online or data breach
- 9%: forgery
- 6%: change of address/postal fraud
